Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrolysis, and how does it work?

Electrolysis is the only FDA approved form of permanent hair removal that kills the reproductive hair cell, ensuring that the hair does not grow back. A very fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle and kills the hair at the root using either an alternating current, a direct current or a combination of the two to deliver heat energy and/or a chemical reaction to destroy the hair permanently.

The pulse of electricity eliminates the hair follicles ability to regenerate, thereby preventing any future growth from the follicle. This process must be performed on each individual hair follicle, collectively debilitating hair growth over multiple sessions.

Is electrolysis painful?

One of the most common questions asked by patients is how painful is electrolysis? Every patient’s threshold for pain is different, but the best way to describe it is like a rubber band being snapped against the skin. This lasts for a split second for each hair follicle destroyed. Depending on the area of treatment and the pain tolerance of the client this can be considered mild to severe.

We have some effective pain management tips and tools, and our electrologists can always schedule shorter sessions for clients that are more sensitive to pain.

Can I continue to shave and/or wax?

Once you start your treatment you must stop all temporary hair removal methods. Depending on your treatment plan, it may be possible for you to continue shaving the area as long as it has had time to grow back before your next treatment. This will be discussed in detail at your consultation.

Does electrolysis work on all hair types and colors?

Electrolysis is safe and effective permanent hair removal for all hair types and skin tones. There is good news for individuals with red, blonde, grey or even white hair, who have been told that other methods of hair removal will not work on them.

How many sessions do I need for permanent hair removal?

The total number of sessions needed to remove hair permanently from a particular area will vary from person to person. It is impossible to predict how someone’s hair will respond to treatment. It can be a long process but you can expect to see a 50% reduction in the number of hairs to be treated every 3 months as long as you’re consistent and follow your treatment planned discussed in your consultation. This reduction could mean shorter sessions and/or less frequent visits.

How long does each electrolysis session typically last?

We typically schedule appointments in 15 minute intervals lasting anywhere between 15 minute to two hours depending on the hair density, tolerance and availability of the client.

Is electrolysis safe for sensitive skin?

Electrolysis works with the widest range of skin and hair types. It's good for sensitive areas of the body, like the face or bikini line as well as for people with sensitive skin in general. Be sure to discuss any skin concerns at your consultation so appropriate measures can be taken.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with electrolysis?

Electrolysis is very safe. Very slight risks of infection (from an unsterile needle) or scarring exist if the electrolysis is not done correctly. These risks are very low if you choose a certified, professional electrolysis practice. Here at Bare with Me Electrology we use one time use probes and go above and beyond with keeping our clients safe. You may have a slight reddening of the skin during or right after treatment which we treat with aftercare using either cataphoresis or high frequency to reduce redness and swelling.

How much does electrolysis cost?

Prices will vary depending on the length of your session as well as location. Genital work does put more stress on the electrologists body so there is a different price list for these services. See our pricing tab for more information.

Can I remove hair from any part of my body through electrolysis?

Any hair on your body can be removed with electrolysis with the exception of hair inside the ear canal (on the ears is fine) as well as inside of the nostril (the edge is also fine).

What should I expect during an electrolysis session?

A thin probe, which is often even finer than the hair is inserted into the opening of the hair follicle. You wont even feel the insertion since it’s going into an existing opening. A small electrical current and/or chemical reaction destroys the hair growth cells. The skin where the needle enters may feel temporarily hot or like a pinch, the probe is then removed and the released hair slides out using a pair of tweezers by the electrologist.

How should I prepare for my electrolysis appointment?

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water and having clean skin helps unwanted hair slide out more easily. Remove your makeup before your appointment, so the hair follicles are clean and accessible. Not drinking caffeine can help make treatments more bearable.

Will I need any downtime or recovery after electrolysis?

First and foremost, please ensure that you keep the treated area meticulously clean and dry for the first 48 hours post treatment. This means no makeup. No downtime is required but you will likely have redness.

Can electrolysis treat ingrown hairs or folliculitis?

Though ingrown hair could affect anyone, people with coarse or curly hair are more apt to suffer from ingrown hair or folliculitis. Though it has since been used to treat all unwanted hair, electrolysis was originally developed to remove ingrown hair and is a very effective solution.

Is electrolysis suitable for transgender individuals seeking facial or body hair removal?

Electrolysis hair removal is the most reliable proven option available today to permanently remove transgender facial and genital hair. Laser hair removal can be an acceptable method but the laser is usually not enough by itself to remove all facial hair permanently.

Are the electrolysis methods used by your business approved by a professional association?

All of our electrologists were professionally trained by Certified Professional Electrologists (CPE) and are licensed by The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, Nevada State Board of Cosmetology and members of the American Electrology Association (AEA).

Can electrolysis lead to scarring or skin discoloration?

When performed properly scarring is very rare. It is very important to find a well trained electrologist to minimize any risks and skin reactions. Be sure to disclose any medical conditions before beginning electrolysis to reduce adverse reactions.
